An organization dedicated to offering arts education to make glass part of your artistic vernacular.

we are open!

Hello “Blown Away” “KCUR Creative Adventures” and “KSHBs ONE TANK TRIPS” fans! Welcome. I am glad your curiosity has brought you here. We are scheduling private class for up to 6 people for 3 hour blocks. You can start with marbles or beads as your introduction to the world of melting glass. The cost is $85 per 3 hour session per person. All materials and equipment are included and you get to keep what you make. We schedule both weekday and weekend times for your convenience. Scroll down to find the ‘make an appointment’ button.

The studio is modern, fully outfitted with the latest equipment. We have many years of glass experience in several different genres. We use Bethlahem torches, Arrow Springs kilns and an “over-ambitious” ventilation system that sucks all the air out the studio for your safety. The studio is located in a residential area.

We have taught hundreds of students in the past 11 years and we are looking forward to teaching you.

Celebrating 11 years teaching the glassy community in Kansas City!

What if you sign up for 6 people and one person is a no-show?

Lewis Wilson is your GodFather. Whether you know it or not. Many flame workers around the United States credit Lewis with spreading the word via video VHS long before YouTube and even library books. Lewis has been melting glass on a regular basis for decades.

Class description:

First day: The slant of the class would be a logical approach to “ old school style” sculpting. It would start with a study on the many different styles of doing wings . Then move on to small dragons, wizards and other fantasy designs. The first piece after lunch would be a jester followed by “plastic toy” exercise. The last demo of the day would be making a couple different flowers.

The second day will be flower construction. A couple different ones. After that , the class will move go going back to sculptures using some plastic toys. This would end out the day. I could do an Indian dancer demo after if time allows.

Day three: Indian Dancers and Horses.

Murrini is old Italian (Muranese) technique of creating a glass cane with a 2-D design that is revealed on it’s cross-section. A 3-D murrini is a type of murrini that can be further manipulated to create a 3-D form. In this class students will have a brief overview of how murrini is made using soft glass, and will learn how to apply that knowledge in creation of a 3-D flower murrini. Various assembly techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Students will make their own cherry blossom murrini and learn how to apply it to create a 3-D effect. At the end of the class another use of the 3-D flower murrini in implosions will be revealed.

Floral Implosion

soft GLASS - PRIOR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED

9:30AM -5PM (ISH

Floral implosion

Implosion technique stands on it’s own in the world of glass working methods because nothing else achieves the beauty and elegance of a naturally looking floral design by pure physics of glass manipulation. In this class, students will learn what is implosion technique and how it works. Using soft glass, a variety of floral shapes will be demonstrated along with detailed explanation of how to control the shape of implosion. Students will learn how to bring sizable chunks of glass to temperature and how to manipulate and shape them off-mandrel. A discussion of how to use implosion elements in jewelry, blown work and other items along with demonstrations will give students a lot of inspiration to take to their own studios. One year of flameworking experience with soft glass required. Ability to work off-mandrel a plus.

MASTER CLASSES REQUIRE PREVIOUS FLAMEWORKING EXPERIENCE. TO SIGN UP, PLEASE EMAIL SARA. A $100 DEPOSIT IS DUE AT THE TIME OF SIGNING UP.
